Why should I be certified

Roof System Installer Certifications

To become an NRCA ProCertified® Roof System Installer, you must pass an online multiple-choice test on low- or steep-slope roof systems as well as a hands-on performance exam to demonstrate your skills, knowledge and commitment to industry best practices.

Hands-on performance exams are scheduled with a Qualified Assessor and can be conducted at any authorized testing locations that meet the requirements.

Online knowledge exam

ProCertification online knowledge exams assess a candidate’s essential knowledge for low- or steep-slope roof systems. Candidates must pass this exam before scheduling a hands-on performance exam. Interested candidates can take an online knowledge exam before applying for certification. Resources to prepare a candidate and links to the exams are available by clicking here.

Hands-on performance exam

The hands-on performance exam requires applicants to demonstrate system-specific installation skills and safety requirements. Exams are scheduled directly with a Qualified Assessor and can be conducted at a contractor's shop, an authorized testing location or during other scheduled performance exam events such as the annual International Roofing Expo®.

Process Overview

  1. Meet the eligibility requirements shown in the table. The online exame can be taken before or after applying for certification. The onle exame can be accessed on NRCA's website.
  2. Complete an online application form.
  3. Have your employer verify your skills. After receiving your application, NRCA will email a link to an Employer Verification form to your supervisor.
  4. Pass a hands-on performance exam. The exam can be taken a maximum of two times.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 24 months experience installing various architectural metal flashings and accessories on steep-or-low-sloped roofs, including but not limited to coping systems, fascia systems, edge metal profiles, counterflashing profiles, metal valley flashings, gutter profiles, and head-and-sidewall flashings. Field work installing sheet metal in other construction and service industries may be deemed applicable toward the experience requirement at the discretion of the NRCA Certification Exams Committee
  • Most recent experience must be within the past 12 months
  • Pass the steep or low-slope online knowledge exam

  • A minimum of 36 months experience installing metal panel roof systems on steep-slope roofs, including but not limited to measuring, cutting, field fabrication of .032 prefinished aluminum panels, various flashing details, valleys, and penetration details. Installers need to be familiar with the installation of underlayment materials
  • Most recent experience must be within the past 12 months
  • Pass the steep online knowledge exam
